M177 M178

Mercedes AMG M177 / M178 Twin-Turbo V8

The M177 and M178 (shared architecture) are AMG’s modern V8s — powering models like C63, E63, GLC63, and GT.
These engines balance raw power with tunability, making them a core pillar of your upgrade catalog.

The Mercedes M176, M177 and M178 engines are designed clean sheet for boost by AMG.  The M177 and M178 are hand built with the M178 featuring dry sump lubrication.

The M177 has several power packages including the M177.1 featured in the C63, GLC63 and the twin-scroll M177.2 featured in the E63, GLE63, S63, and G63.

The M176 is a mercedes built version of the M177.1 that is used in non-amg applications where a powerful V8 is still needed.  These include the S580, GLE580, GLS 580, and G500, G550, G580.  Some of these models also feature “eq boost” hybridization.

Some of the main ways to increase power are to use bigger turbocharges, increase cooling, and perform ECU, TCU, and CPC coding.

Specs & History

  • Displacement: 4.0L V8 with twin twin-scroll turbos (hot-vee layout)
  • Power Output: Stock output ranges ~469–577 hp (depending on model/variant)
  • Usage: Used in AMG models such as C63 (W205), E63, GLC63, GT4-Door (GT63), G63, and many others
  • Engineering Highlights: Hot-vee layout for compactness, efficient airflow path, high specific output
  • Variants: M178 is often used in exotic/higher-spec variants (GT, Black Series, etc.)

Performance & Upgrade Paths

  • Advanced ECU/TCU maps to unlock safe power & torque curves
  • Upgraded intercoolers, pump systems, and charge cooling enhancements
  • Turbo upgrades, hybrid turbos, or high-flow turbo replacements
  • Support fueling (injectors, pumps) for ethanol or aggressive tuning
  • Exhaust, downpipes, and headers for better flow and exhaust tuning

Why Upgrade the M177 / M178?

  • Modern Performance Core: These engines are in current production and support high power levels with good factory backing.
  • Strong Tuning Headroom: With supporting mods, they can deliver very high outputs reliably.
  • Holistic Builds Matter: Because these are modern engines, proper balance of cooling, fueling, exhaust, and tuning is essential for longevity and response.
