M256
Mercedes M256 3.0L Inline-6 Turbo / Mild Hybrid
The M256 is Mercedes’ modern turbocharged inline-6 with mild hybrid assist (EQ Boost).
It blends efficiency, torque, and emission control — and it offers solid tuning headroom when paired with supporting upgrades.
The Mercedes M256 is an inline 6 cylinder engine that is a clean sheet designed for boost. These are supplemented by hybrid turbochargers and electric compressors on some models.
These require a bench flash for the ECU. The CPC can be remote flashed but a new module must be installed. The TCU tune can be remotely flashed.
Specs & History
- Displacement: 3.0L inline-6 with turbocharging + mild hybrid (integrated starter generator)
- Output: Stock variants deliver ~362–429 hp depending on model and region
- Usage: Found in newer AMG 53 / AMG 55 variants (e.g. E53, C53, GLC53)
- Hybrid Assist: EQ Boost provides torque fill and increased efficiency under load
- Engineering Focus: Balances performance with modern emissions, efficiency, and packaging
Performance & Upgrade Paths
- Software calibration tweaks (ECU/TCU) to optimize boost, torque, and hybrid assist curves
- Upgraded cooling / intercoolers to handle thermal loads
- Turbo / hybrid turbo upgrades or retuning for higher boost
- Fueling upgrades where higher ethanol or advanced maps are intended
- Exhaust / downpipe systems to reduce backpressure
Why Upgrade the M256?
- Modern Architecture: Leveraging a contemporary engine means tuning gains may come more from calibration than brute hardware.
- Synergy with Hybrid Assist: Tuning that coordinates turbo torque and EQ Boost can yield smoother, stronger delivery.
- Thermal Headroom: With performance upgrades, stronger cooling becomes essential.
