Remove Smoke Smell or Fumes from a Catless Car or Smoker’s Car

My ex inherited a house that a smoker, smoked every day in.  This woman was awesome, completely unrelated to my ex but still gave her a house.  It needed a lot of work, beyond just painting I ended up learning how to remodel from this house.

Remodeled Bathroom

Her dad was a general contractor/site supervisor or whatever and he taught how to do things right.  He didn't really help me with work, but the knowledge he bestowed was awesome.

Back to the Point

But the first thing that drove me nuts was the house smelled like smoke.  Ali (my ex) told me she painted every wall, removed all the carpet, and was at a loss as to what to do next.

I ended up going down this rabbit hole and came up with some carrots I thought I'd share.

There is a machine called an Ozone Generator.  Ozone, O3, generators are not "sharper image" style air filters that generate small amounts of O3.  These things pump out dangerous amounts of O3.  People, and pets should not be in the room when they run, or for at least double the time it has run for.

Well after hitting each room several times, 2 hours each room, then wait a few days, another run as needed.  The smoke smell from decades of smoking inside was eliminated.

I ended up using this a few times on smokers cars too.  (Ali smokes) and it works great but with a technique and caveat.

Most people think you want the room or car completely sealed, and to be honest you really want the machine to be fed fresh oxygen, not O3.  Therefore you want to have the trunk open run the Ozone generator with a window in the front slightly cracked (to push the O3 forward), with the air/heat on and on recirculation so it pulls the O3 through the system and kills any fumes in those areas too.

I have seen some people run the machine outside the car and feed it into the car through a flex pipe to accomplish the same goal.  If the car is really bad it might be another option to consider.

The links to the ozone generator are affiliate links, I may get like a fraction of a percent from any sale, but it is also the machine I use and can recommend.  Don't pump it for hours in a small confined area though it will burn out the catalyst.

It was pointed out to me by Daddy Duke on the youtubes that this may also help sanitize cars of corona virus:

As always please do not defeat any car emissions systems unless the car is for racing or upgraded parts are used.

DC to Easton, MD

As the pandemic threatens further, social distanced events are more important than ever.  A very nice day trip is from the DC area to Easton and St. Michael's MD. And a beautiful drive fits the bill.  Off of exit 19 on 495 you get to a fairly straight high speed road of route 50 until you reach Annapolis area where the speed drops down to a pedestrian 55mph.

A view of a CLS on the Eastern Shore

After driving past Annapolis there is a nice BBQ place, Red Hot and Blue, and then you hit the Bay Bridge which is approximately 4 miles long and offers some views.  But please don't slow down or stop.  The toll is $4 for both ways, or $2.50 with an MD ezpass.

Incredible Quality Salad Fast Casual at Easton, MD

Easton has a beautiful downtown area, an old meeting house, the estate where Frederick Douglass was a slave, and the courthouse saw the signing of several important documents by the founding fathers.

Cooking Crabs is an Eastern Shore tradition

Today Easton offers a beautiful park, great dining including Scossa, a gorgeous coffee bar in "Weather Gage" and an after dinner bar where one can sip from an incredible curated collection in the Prager building.  Prager also offers a wonderful ice cream shop, which really is fantastic, a salad place, and an upscale dining option.

Foxy's in St. Michaels

In St. Michaels there are various dining options, one of my goto's is Carpenter Street Pub.  There is a distillery, a winery, some beautiful restoration shops, along with a harbor filled with yachts.  Foxy's is the place to visit for a drink.  While Crab Claw, The Patriot, and the Maritime museum offer some tourist fun.

View from the top of Crab Claw

The Wedding Crashers was filmed in St. Michaels Inn at Perry Cabin, which also hosts a beautiful car show.  Please find below some pictures from their grounds.

There are many great restaurants in St. Michaels including 208 Talbot.  St. Michael's is a bit further off of 50 than Easton.

It is said that during the war of 1812 St. Michael's residents knew an attack was eminent, agreed as a city to extinguish all lights in town and instead bring lanterns some distance away.  And the British cannons struck the lanterns in the woods, with only one house hit which is known as the cannon ball house.

While a drive to the Eastern Shore is beautiful, a boat trip should be on your todo list.  With many interesting sights visible from the water.  Driving to Kent Island and taking a motor boat you could hit down town St. Michaels easily, but would miss Easton.

Potomac Cars and Coffee

I went to Potomac Cars and Coffee about a month ago now.  I meant to write about it then but life got in the way.  I remember the show well though, it was beautiful weather, there were beautiful cars.

I parked on the wrong side though, and my son really didn't want to go and let that be known.  Although I caught him looking at a few Lamborghini's with the wonder I had looking at Lamborghini's when I was his age. So I may have honked at some beautiful cars while they drove through red lights at the end, sorry I know it's not cool.  Dealing with a grumpy six year old though.

A beautiful Renntech

After the show we hit up vie de france for some breakfast snacks, and went out to the C&O canal.

Road Trip DC to NYC

I went to visit my wonderful Nana leaving from NW DC area.  Shockingly i95, i895 were both closed at baltimore.  So we set off again the next day.

I went on this trip originally untuned.  Thinking I would just put the car in cruise and chill.  Wow, I was wrong.  I was flooring it several times.  There are aggressive drivers, with a win-lose mentality.  I'm not talking about rolling pulls against M4s or Taycans.  Some of these drivers do not want you to pass them, but drive slowly up hills or otherwise annoyingly such as overcorrections with breaks.

Took about 4 hours to get to Greenwich.  Beautiful area.

Seeing my Nana.  Many wonderful memories.  Some memories of the past.

Always great to see logos of brands long merged.

On the return trip I was tuned, and it felt better tuned.  You don't drive as hard of course, no need to floor it, burying your foot will firmly plant you in the back of whatever is in front of you tuned. Untuned, it helps you get you may not get to the click part of the, but you will be pushing that go pedal far.

One of the things I realized I was a bit too gentle tuned.  There is a ton of torque but you still have to drive it.  Set the pace for the car and she responds.

I would absolutely not drive tuned with ESP Off, slam on the gas over broken or rough pavement but you do need to drive it.

Overall driving with 600hp is much nicer than 500hp to NYC.  It helps you escape bad situations, bad drivers, with much less drama.

DC To Harpers Ferry West Virginia

Against the backdrop of a struggle toward a more enlightened view on race Harpers Ferry West Virginia is an intersting location and in general an interesting state.  West Virigina of course broke off with Virginia and the south I believe for the expressed reason of the slavery.

Harpers Ferry was one of the less than a handful of violent anti-slave uprisings.  Most abolitionist were more passive, perhaps fueled by quaker ideals.  Of which some of the early quaker meeting houses make for interesting stops when traveling through the mid-atlantic.

The drive from DC to Harpers Ferry is beautiful and can range from direct and fast on i270, to more beautiful and slower, and some combination of most beautiful and slowest.   About an hour at 55-65 speed limits with the clarksburg outlets of note about three quarters the way through.

The meandering route through W. VA and VA mountains Bolivar, and Harpers Ferry National Park with stops can be a fun day within an easy drive.

It is a beautiful drive and one wear my tuned Mercedes ran great.  She should be around 600 at the crank hp with approximately 565-585 93 octane from the tune and 23 from the air intake risers/filter, and 5-12 from the resonator delete.  Overall very thankful for the day and how she rode.

We packed to go camping but elected to just do some tubing.  About 60-90 minutes on the water with the kids sans beer and it was fun.  A beautiful day and temperature with many enjoying the social distancing socializing afforded.  I would have attempted to take pictures but learned from my trip to Xel Hai or whatever in Cancun, that it is not a good idea.

Really nice drive out either way and a nice place to hear your exhaust roar a bit when overtaking slower traffic.  It is such a beautiful drive it doesn't matter if there is traffic.  It really won't bother you at all as you look over the bonitas vistas.

There are some great high speed corners and nice uphill pulls.  We returned back on the Dulles toll road via Harpers Ferry and Bolivar, which is a beautiful but way under-speed limited road.  It could easily be a 65-70mph road for the stretches outside of dulles international airport, which itself is fairly big...

Road Trip DC to Orlando, Florida via Port Canaveral

In January I took off for a 1000 mile solo road trip from DC to Port Canaveral, FL to get on what had to be one of the last cruises that sailed before the Corona Virus pandemic.   My son loved his disney cruise and unfortunately I was breaking up with his mom at the time which led to the solo road trip and a fairly intense Disney vacation and cruise...

Mickey Mouse gave Jonah a cold thing.

One of the things that hit me is that you need to check the oil level before you go, and midway.  My car at somepoint, seemed like it was low on oil and I filled up on the way.   This was the first big road trip in my CLS 550 which just had a few thousand miles.

Outboards at Chart House

To be honest it wasn't the easiest trip on her, between burning some oil, and later my wheels felt out of balance which apparently they were out of round which is even worse.  I think some of the engine mount or tranny mounts took some wear and to be honest she felt like a brand new car before this trip, after this trip she felt like she had 10,000 miles on her.  Still nice, never pushed too hard, never gave me a hard time.  Fired up every time, proceeded well.  But in the future for a trip like this I will get an oil change and TLC before and after.

Road trip me with one of my favorite trucks.

In fact I stopped at MB Orlando (north one), to get an oil change.  While it took forever, and they forgot to reset the counter the service advisor was really good.  I ended up taking a few pictures with some of their newer cars and met a nice woman Beth there.  Some we still talk.

A boat at the Chart House

The return trip went well too.  I did get very tired.  I actually slept in the car a bit as I realized my Mercedes is nicer than many hotel rooms and I feel comfortable in it.  Took a couple hour nap at a chic-fil-a parking lot and felt really refreshed and could keep on going.

If you have a hand held tuner I would likely advise to go to stock for these long trips to prevent excess wear judging from how this trip went.

Overall I really enjoyed it, and the sleep monitor was very helpful, reminding me to take a nap.

Road Trip DC to Hilton Head Island

In this current time, an escape, a drive, along the coast is therapeutic. The miles are no longer a chore, but a welcome cinema of life where we have choice at each stage.

I took my son Jonah to Hilton Head Island for his 6th birthday.  He loves to swim so we decided it was a great place for him to enjoy swimming.

Hilton Head Island

We drove about 585 miles in 8 hours, stopping at South of The Border tourist attraction since 1950 each direction because, I have a now six year old.  I picked up some fireworks for his bday.

Overall it was my first trip longer than 400 miles on the michelin pilot sport AS3+, with the new UPD Air Spacers, Resonator Delete, and with the new android screen, and she felt great with almost no detectable drone at all.

DC to Hilton Head Island South Carolina

It was comfortable to cruise, I added a splash of oil other than that nothing to mention other than the fact my CLS550 is just a fantastic GT.  The air suspension and semi-active shocks are fantastic.  The steering is direct without being unstable. The engine roars to life, especially now with the resonator delete, when needed to overtake.

St. Michaels Concours d’Elegance 2019

There were some beautiful cars, weather, and scenery at the 2019 St. Michaels Concours d’Elegance.  Here are a few pictures of Mercedes I took.  As I fumbled with my cell phone camera I over heard two of the Mercedes Owners discuss they still drive their cars.
